    This Apprenticeship provides the ideal foundation for anyone wishing to develop professional skills in cooking, preparing, service and working in a team.

    The course is a great way to build on your skills and gain a recognised qualification whilst also earning a salary. Plus, 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their Apprenticeship!*
  • How will I be assessed?

    You’ll be assessed flexibly, both in the workplace and at College, through:

    • Oral/written questions
    • Assignments
    • Practical work
    • A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates the skills you have learned
  • What can I expect to learn?

    Mandatory units:

    • Maintenance of a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
    • Working effectively as part of a hospitality team
    • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
    • Maintain, handle and clean knives

    Optional units include:

    • Prepare meat for basic dishes
    • Process dried ingredients prior to cooking
    • Prepare and mix spice and herb blends
    • Prepare, cook and finish basic pasta dishes
    • Prepare, cook and finish basic cakes, sponges, biscuits and scones

    Functional Skills (if applicable):

    • English Level 1
    • Maths Level 1
  • How can I progress after this course?

    On successful completion of this Apprenticeship, you could progress onto full-time employment, professional job-specific qualifications, Higher Apprenticeships or a degree programme.
    Following further study you could work as:

    • A Kitchen Assistant, earning between £11,500 and £16,500 per year.
    • A Chef, with earnings ranging from £13,000 to £50,000, depending on your experience.
    • A Baker, earning between £14,000 and £40,000 a year.
  • What do I need to join the course?

    To complete an Apprenticeship you will need an employer who is willing to support you throughout your training. If you have not found one, we can help you with your search.
    We’d like to see a proven track record of very good attendance at work/school, along with a good reference from school/a previous employer.

    Assessment


    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

    Financial


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Tutors teach throughout the day and evening and are not always available by phone. Please leave a voicemail message where possible and we will ring you back as soon as possible.
    Please note: Learners on a Learner Responsive course (shown under the course code) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
