Performing Arts BTEC Diploma Level 1

  • Overview of the course

    This is a one year vocational course. It will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Level 1 qualifications will provide a broad, solid foundation for progression to Level 2 and employment in the performing arts sector.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be set a series of practical assignments through the year by your tutors and these will then be marked by that tutor. All course tutors will assess you on your performance work in acting and dance. There is an expectation that you keep a working log book for each unit that you study and this will be used as part of the assessment process.
  • What can I expect to learn?

    You will study ten practical units across the year. You will use these units to get an understanding of how the industry works and to put on a series of live shows. Other units through the year will include acting techniques, dance techniques, how to promote a performance or provide technical support.
  • What qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

    You will receive a nationally recognised vocational qualification: BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Performing Arts
  • How can I progress after this course?

    After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to the Performing Arts BTEC Extended Certificate Level 2.

    Following further study you could work as a:
    • Actor, entertainer or presenter and you could earn an average of around £34,000 per year depending on experience and role.
    • A Stage Manager, earning between £18,000 and £45,000 a year.
    • A Choreographer, with your salary dependent on experience, reputation and the production you’re working on.
    • A Lighting Technician, where you could earn up to £27,000 a year, depending on experience.
  • What do I need to join the course?

    No prior knowledge, understanding, skills or qualifications are required before learners register for this qualification. You will be required to have an interview and audition for the course, which will involve aspects of acting and dance.

    You will need a lot of motivation, commitment, energy and the ability to work in a team to meet deadlines.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.


    Tutors teach throughout the day and evening and are not always available by phone. Please leave a voicemail message where possible and we will ring you back as soon as possible.
    Please note: Learners on a Learner Responsive course (shown under the course code) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):

    If you are unable to provide certificates you will be asked to complete a self declaration form when you enrol.
