    Complementary Therapy has been a growing industry over the past 20 years being recognised for its involvement in maintaining good health and helping individual with varied disorders and stresses of life.

    This course will provide you with knowledge of the principles of Aromatherapy and how to practice Aromatherapy in a commercial setting. You'll learn the theory behind Aromatherapy, how to deal with clients and how to plan effective treatments. You will also learn how to reflect upon the outcomes of a treatment, provide aftercare and offer a series of treatments to achieve a desirable result. This in-depth study program explores the history of aromatherapy, relevant massage and movements. You will be taught specific Massage techniques, the benefits and contra-indications of aromatherapy Massage and client care. You will also learn how to reflect upon the outcomes of a treatment, provide aftercare and offer a series of treatments to achieve a desirable result.

    This in-depth Aromatherapy study program explores the extraction, distillation and blending of thirty essential oils from plants, plus relevant massage movements. You will be taught specific Aromatherapy massage techniques, the art of creative blending and practical uses for each of the oils. Sourcing, extracting and distillation of plants, the benefits and contra-indications of Aromatherapy and client counselling.

    Complementary has been recognised by the National Health Service and a lot of the treatments are offered by NHS. The course is a QCF recognised qualification. This Diploma enables you to practice as a therapist and supports the acquisition of public liability insurance. The course is comprehensive in its delivery of both theory and practical elements.

  • Entry requirements

    You need to show good communication skills and life skills. A good general education is essential for this demanding course. An excellent level of English is required. You must be able to speak, read, write and understand English fluently.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed through assignment work, oral questions, practical assessments, case studies and anatomy and physiology exams.

    The practical module requires you to complete case studies at home. It is your responsibility to document, evidence and provide your own clients for these. Case studies are an invaluable way to see how each therapy works at aiding health & wellbeing and will be marked as evidence criteria for the practical unit. This course requirements need to be completed during your course.

    Additional costs to the course consist of professional uniform The course begins in September and finishes in July.

    Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include visits and extra external professional development courses, which are payable by all students.

    The Complementary industry has an accepted dress code and all students will be expected to comply with these standards of dress when working in the Salon. No jewellery or acrylic nails are allowed. Professional work wear will include a black tunic (approx. ?29) and full smart full-length black trousers and black full shoes.

    You will purchase the stationary and Aromatherapy kit.

    As part of your practical assessments, you will perform practical treatments on clients. Learners will be equally responsible for providing clients and they will incur a college fee, with discounted rates for friends and family. You will be required to carry out treatments on clients, as part of the criteria set forth by the awarding body requirements.

    You will be expected to have a minimum of 90% attendance and all absences must be explained to your tutor with medical evidence if there is more than one week of absence.

    When you complete the Complementary Therapy Level 3, you have an opportunity to progress onto Aromatherapy Massage, Reflexology or a Sports Therapy Level 3.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Adult Learners

    Adult learners (19+) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
    If you are unable to provide certificates you will be asked to complete a self declaration form when you enrol.
