    This exciting course is designed to bring out your creativity and flair for make-up and hair styling in readiness for a career in this competitive industry. This course is for those wishing to gain employment in the beauty industry either in the UK or abroad particularly with a focus on make-up. Typical forms of employment could be in beauty salons, hotels, health clubs, department stores or holiday resorts. It also offers opportunity for employment in the beauty retail sector.

    The course consists of both practical and theory aspects of make-up:
    - Working in the industry
    - Presenting a professional image in a salon
    - Client care and communication in beauty related industries
    - Apply make-up
    - Provide eyelash and brow treatments

    Learners must demonstrate a commitment to learn and have the appropriate life skills.

    You will need: Level 1 Beauty Therapy or grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths.

    Good dexterity skills are paramount and this will be with a skills test. You will need to enjoy working with other people and co-operate as part of a team. You need to be committed and keen to practice as you learn new skills.

    These are required together with a successful interview and good reference.

    Applicants will need to be motivated and enthusiastic and have a willingness to reflect industry requirements for dress code, professional attitude and customer care standards.

    Personal Attributes: Beauty Therapy is a service industry and some of the qualities required are :
    * Artistic flair.
    * Dexterity and the ability to develop skills.
    * A sparkling personality.
    * Communication and customer care skills.
    * A capacity to understand underpinning theory, including science.
    * A commitment to learn throughout your career.
    * Capacity for hard work!
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed while working in the College Salons on real clients. The practical tasks are assessed and your achievements will be recorded in your logbook. There are written tests to assess knowledge and assignment work for certain aspects of the course. Records of all the work undertaken should be kept to provide evidence of competence. These will form the basis of your portfolio, together with a range of photographic evidence. The practical assessments will be graded pass, merit or distinction.

    The course begins in January and finishes in June. Related additional costs may include visits and extra external professional development courses, which are payable by all students.

    You will need to have a creative flair with good dexterity skills and attend group and individual tutorials. There will be external trips and competitions that you will need to attend as part of this course.
    The Make-up industry has an accepted dress code and all students will be expected to comply with these standards of dress when working in the Salon.
    No jewellery or acrylic nails are allowed by the exam board.
    Professional work wear will include a black tunic (approx. £29) and full smart full-length black trousers and black full shoes. You will purchase the stationery and file kits at approximately £6.

    As part of your practical assessments, you will perform make over practical sessions and will be responsible for providing models if not working on peers. Assessments will be to the awarding body requirements.

    You will be expected to have a minimum of 90% attendance and all absences must be explained to your tutor with medical evidence if there is more than one week of absence.

    Level 3 Diploma in Media Make-Up or Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy may be a natural progression from this course. This qualification needs to be achieved first.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Adult Learners

    Adult learners (19+) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
    If you are unable to provide certificates you will be asked to complete a self declaration form when you enrol.
