    Counselling Skills is an ABC qualification for people who may already use counselling skills as part of their work – either in a paid or voluntary capacity. It involves 150 class contact hours and a compulsory residential weekend during the first term.
  • What you'll learn

    The course aims to develop theoretical knowledge, practical counselling skills and personal development. Students will learn the concepts of the person centred approach and an overview of two other models. Students will also become competent in a range of one-to-one counseling skills.
  • Entry requirements

    Assessment will be by means of:
    • 3 pieces of written work
    • One recorded counseling skills session and case study
    • Ongoing assessment by tutor, peers, self and an ABC external examiner.

    The minimum entry requirements are:
    • Completion of a recent 30 hour Level 2 Counselling Concepts course or equivalent
    • A Written application
    • A successful interview
    • 2 references (one from a former course tutor)

    The Level 3 Counselling Skills Certificate offers many opportunities for employment in the field of community work. Successful candidates may wish to progress to the next level of training, the Level 4 Diploma.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Adult Learners

    Adult learners (19+) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
    If you are unable to provide certificates you will be asked to complete a self declaration form when you enrol.
