  • Overview of the course

    The aim of this qualification is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to 7 years of age with applied knowledge in the early years, 0-5 years. The qualification content meets the Department for Education's (DfE) Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.
  • What you'll learn

    You will cover a variety of topics, including:

    • Support physical care routines for children
    • An introduction to the role of the Early Years Practitioner
    • Understand how to work in partnership
    • Supporting children’s play
    • Support children’s positive behaviour

    You will also need to attend a work placement and gain 250 hours experience across the academic year. By doing this you will gain hands on practical experience, equipping you with the skills to become an Early Years Practitioner.

    You’ll also study English and maths GCSE if appropriate.

    Elements of study
    Your programme consists of the following elements:
    • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
    • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
    • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance,
    communication and team work)
    • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
    • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)
  • Entry requirements

    We ask that you have at least 4 GCSEs grades 3 or above, including English Language and maths. You'll also be invited for an interview and will be asked to provide a satisfactory school reference.

    You’ll need an enthusiastic approach to your studies, excellent attendance at school or your last place of study, and a clear DBS check.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed throughout your work placement and through a portfolio of written work such as assignments, presentations and designing leaflets.
  • Is there anything else I need to know?

    You will need to apply for a DBS to show you do not have a criminal record and are safe to work with children. College will help you to do this. There is no fee for the DBS application.

    On successful completion of the qualification you could remain in College and apply to the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (EYE) or the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce . Alternatively you can enter the workforce as a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner.

    Following further study you could work as:
    • A Nursery Manager where you can earn between
    £22,000 and £30,000 a year, depending on experience
    • A Child & Early Years Officer, earning £25,000 a year on average
    • A Primary Teacher, earning an average of £36,000 a year
