Full-Time Study Programmes

  • Overview of the course

    Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

    You will explore both practical and theoretical aspects of the Carpentry and Joinery trade and you will be taught by industry-experienced tutors in workshops that reflect the workplace.

    Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.
  • What you'll learn

    You will learn and practise carpentry & joinery techniques, including:
    • Care, Use and Maintenance of Hand Tools
    • Knowledge of Woodworking Joints
    • Reading Construction Drawings
    • Constructor Health, Safety and Welfare, including Legislation and Personal Protective Equipment
    • Principles of Building Construction, Information, Communication, Foundations, Floors, Walls, Roof and
    Environmental Considerations

    You’ll carry out practical activity in the workshop and gain underpinning knowledge in the classroom – the ideal combination.

    If required for your chosen career or HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.

    Elements of study

    Your programme consists of the following elements:
    • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
    • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
    • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
    • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
    • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

    We will ask you to complete an initial assessment and guidance session, and then attend an informal interview and provide a satisfactory school reference.

    We will talk all of this through with you. The main thing is that you’re committed and motivated.
  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is on a modular basis and continues throughout the duration of the course. We will ask you to complete practical and online assessments for each of the units.

  • Future opportunities

    After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to the Carpentry & Joinery Diploma Level 3 course.

    Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could opt for a Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship and work as an Apprentice Carpenter or Joiner.

    Following further study you could work as:
    • A Carpenter, earning between £16,000 and £40,000 a year depending on experience
    • A Wood Machinist, earning between £16,000 and
    £28,000 a year
    • A Shop Fitter, earning between £15,000 and £30,000 a year
