Step into Catering

  • Overview of the course

    The Step into Catering course helps learners develop their catering and hospitality skills. The course has been designed for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities assessed at Entry Level - Level 1. Learners will be working towards an Entry Level 3/Level 1 Introduction to Hospitality and Catering as well as maths, English and employability skills. Learners will also attend a work placement and take part in enrichment activities throughout the year.
  • What you'll learn

    Prior to any work commencing on this course, learners take part in a full college induction programme.

    During tutorials, learners will attend sessions covering topics on enterprise, citizenship, personal development and progression. These sessions focus on topics that are relevant to young people and will help them to progress through their study.

    As part of the course learners will cover the following
    units:
    • Introduction to hospitality and catering
    • Customer service in the hospitality industry
    • Basic food preparation

    Learners will work towards their next level of English and maths as part of the course and attend employability skills sessions. Learners will also attend a work placement and take part in enrichment activities throughout the year. Learners also take part in internal work experience that includes:

    • How to prepare and cook a variety of dishes
    • Names and uses of equipment used in catering
    • Name and identify ingredients
    • Make goods to sell for enterprise
    • Employability skills
    • Customer care skills
  • Entry requirements

    There are no entry requirements other than an interest and a commitment however, you need to attend all of your classes.
  • How will I be assessed?

    Learners will be assessed by the tutor and support workers, who will observe learners completing tasks either independently or with support. Staff will question learners to check understanding and recall and to encourage choice making. All learners will build a portfolio of evidence to achieve their qualification.
