Overview of the course
If you are under 19 and are considering a course in the fast moving, fashion orientated world of hairdressing then this is the course for you.
This one year course is a stepping stone into the exciting world of the hairdressing industry. It will introduce you to the discipline of a working environment and encourage you to develop your artistic ability.
The course is delivered in our state-of-the-art Hairdressing Academy which includes five large air conditioned studios, all designed to provide a realistic working environment to students and the public.
What you'll learn
You will be taught by our highly qualified enthusiastic staff. Your learning will cover a wide range of hairdressing skills which are required if you are considering building a career in the hairdressing industry.
The course includes theory including some science related topics and practical training.
There are 10 units of study which include:
• Working in hairdressing
• Health and safety
• Client consultation
• Shampooing and conditioning
• Displaying products
• Colouring hair and styling hair
• Reception duties
• Promoting products and services
• Designing a range of images
You will also study GCSE Maths and English if you don’t have the grades and take part in enrichment opportunities.
Elements of Study
Your programme consists of the following elements:
• Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
• English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
• Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
• Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
• Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)
School leavers will have a good record of attendance, punctuality and a good report from school.
You will need a Hairdressing Level 1 qualification, possess a genuine interest in hairdressing and have good dexterity skills/or equivalent experience.
You will need motivation and enthusiasm for working with people and the general public and you will be committed to learning, training, and practising new skills.
How will I be assessed?
Practical skills will be assessed on paying clients, colleagues and friends in a realistic working environment. You will attend theory classes and this will be assessed by online testing and a completed log book.

Supporting your learning and wellbeing
We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range of dedicated support and wellbeing services. After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to the VRQ in Hairdressing or you may decide to go onto study Barbering or Beauty Therapy.
Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could take up a Hairdressing Apprenticeship and work as an Apprentice Hairdresser.
Following further study you could work as:
• A qualified Media Make-up Artist and earn between£12,000 and £19,000 a year, depending on experience.
• An Image Consultant, earning between £14,000 and£40,000 a year.
• A Salon Manager, earning between £18,000 and 30,000 a year.

You could also benefit from getting involved in volunteering opportunities, both locally and abroad, and youth social action projects, perfect for enhancing your CV.
