Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, took time out of his busy schedule yesterday to visit Bolton College. Andy, Mayor for just over a year, visited the campus on Deane Road to meet learners and staff and unveil a special plaque that seals the College’s commitment to the Bolton 2030 Partnership.
Before the unveiling, Andy enjoyed tea and cake in the College’s Diversity café with the College’s Principal Bill Webster and Karen Westsmith, Director of Curriculum for Adults and Higher Education.
The College, which is due to merge with the University of Bolton in August, is part of the Team Bolton Partnership, dedicated to the success of the Bolton 2030 vision – ensuring our town is a vibrant, welcoming place where people choose to study, work, invest and put down roots.
After unveiling the plaque, Andy spoke at length to the College’s learners about his own visions for Bolton’s future. He explained that young people are a priority for investment and not cuts and he received a round of applause when he detailed his plans for a free bus pass for all 16 to 18 years olds within the Greater Manchester region. He also recognised the importance of investment into adult learning and apprenticeships.
Andy, who has previously visited the College in his earlier role as Culture Secretary said, “It was important that I was here today to show that Greater Manchester is very much behind Bolton’s 2030 vision. The important role learning institutes, like the College and University of Bolton, play in achieving this vision cannot be underestimated. It was wonderful to be greeted by so many learners and I am so proud of Bolton College and all of its achievements, especially the manner in which its tutors and staff support learners of all ages.”
Bill Webster, Principal of Bolton College added, “What better person than Andy Burnham to unveil our plaque – just as Andy is committed to instigating change within the Greater Manchester region, our College is committed to the Bolton 2030 vision, guaranteeing positive change within our town. This is evidenced by our merger with the University of Bolton, which will benefit the learners and people of Bolton massively”.
