Grinches, Gremlins, Bad Santas & Naughty Elves!

17 December 2018

Christmas Media Make up 1

Christmas has come early to Bolton College, with the appearance of some naughty and nice festive characters.

Grinches, Gremlins, Scrooges and Elves roamed the campus, all created by talented Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up students, who went head-to-head to be crowned winner of the College’s Christmas media make-up competition.

Students spent the afternoon using prosthetic pieces, casts, wigs and specialist make-up to transform their models into their own interpretations of the competition’s theme, ‘Winter Wonderland.’

The models, made up of fellow learners, friends and family, walked the College’s catwalk before the winner was announced.

Judges Gemma Fairhurst, Head of Beauty Therapy and Zoe Sykes, Hair & Beauty Learning & Development Mentor, marked the competitors under four categories – Hair, Make-up, Costume and Creativity.

Bethany Bevin took first place, after turning her boyfriend Ryan Southworth into the ultimate Christmas miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Bethany received a bag of Wella goodies for her efforts.

Bethany said: “I was really pleased with the result and so happy to win, especially as the standard of the competition was so high.”

So impressed were the judges that they decided to also give out second and third places. Maliha Bilal took second, after turning her model into the Snow Queen whilst third place was awarded to Kelly Rowland, who created her very own Grinch.

Dominique Rose, a Media Make-up Lecturer at Bolton College, organised the event and said: “The students came up with some fantastic ideas and worked very hard to make them come to life. This has been one of my favourite events and it’s definitely got us in the mood for Christmas!”

Judge Gemma Fairhurst added: “We do lots of competitions in College as it’s a great opportunity for students to practise and show off the skills they’ve developed in class. As always, I was very impressed with the quality of the entrants and proud of all of the learners, who pulled out all the stops to create some wonderful Christmas characters.”
