College hairdressing students showcase their talent for National Apprenticeship Week

Bolton College’s talented hairdressing apprentices demonstrated their creative flair on Monday, with a show-stopping showcase of wonderful styles, dedicated to the varied theme of eras.

The show was part of National Apprenticeship Week, which highlights the success of apprentices and the broad range of skills an Apprenticeship can develop.

Guest speaker Sue Bain, one of Bolton College’s Governors, opened the event, and passionately discussed the importance of Apprenticeships.

15 hairdressing and barbering apprentices worked throughout the day to create some unique and inspiring stylesModelling the styles were Beth Dove, the current Miss Bolton and Beth Talbott, who is Miss Crown & Glory for North West England.

Charlene Brandon is currently completing a Hairdressing Level 2 Apprenticeship with Bolton College, and working at John Lee Guy in Bolton. Charlene, who created a style modelled on the 1980s, said ‘I’ve loved the event, it’s been brilliant and so much fun.

Watching the glittering catwalk show were influential industry figures, including studio educator Tanya Green from Wella Professionals. They were joined by a number of employers, including Ashley’s Hair Lounge and Barbara Gregori Hair. Parents, carers and fellow students were also in attendance, and soaked up the show with enthusiasm.

Katie Woods, owner and stylist at KW Hairdressing & Beauty in Heaton, said: ‘The event was fantastic, I came to support my apprentice Jenna and I was so impressed by her work. The other apprentices were amazing too, it’s great to know that we have so many up and coming stylists in Bolton’.

Sarah BleackleyCurriculum Leader for Hairdressing at Bolton College, said: ‘This is the fourth year of these events, and they just keep on getting better. Employer feedback was excellentthey were so enthusiastic about what they’d seen. Apprenticeships are so important to us at the College, and it’s lovely for the apprentices to put the looks together. They didn’t just style the hair, they used mood boards to create their look, and worked on the costumes and make-up themselves too. It’s a great opportunity to practise and show off the skills they’ve developed’.
