    This exciting course is designed to bring out your creativity and flair for media make-up in readiness for a career in this competitive industry. The Diploma covers Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-up in an enlivening course covering a vast range of skills from; Fashion make-up, application of prosthetic pieces, airbrushing, creative hair-styling, wig work and much more This programme of study will interest students who would like to work within the creative make-up industry, such as fashion, photographic studio’s, theatre or preparation for higher education. The programme will give you a comprehensive coverage of various make-up techniques, airbrushing, special effects, basic prosthetics, hair and the application of a postiche.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed while working in the college salons on real clients. The practical tasks are assessed and your achievements will be recorded in your logbook. There are written tests and oral questions to assess knowledge and assignment work for certain aspects of the course. Records of all the work undertaken should be kept to provide evidence of competence. These will form the basis of your portfolio, together with a range of photographic evidence. The practical assessments will be graded pass, merit or distinction.

    The course consists of both practical and theory aspects of hairstyling and media make-up:
    • Working with colleagues within hair and beauty industries
    • Health and safety in the salon
    • Creative Hair design

    • Fashion and photographic make-up
    • Airbrush make-up
    • Camouflage make-up
    • Media make-up
  • How can I progress after this course?

    After completing this professional level qualification which is recognised internationally within the industry it will allow successful candidates to progress onto employment to become a make-up artist or assistant.
    You could also continue studies within specialist television training or HND/Foundation Degree in fashion subjects, photography or Make up and special effects. A Top-Up degree is also available in Media Make Up Studies
  • What do I need to join the course?

    You will need to have successfully achieved one of the following:
    • VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up
    • VRQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy
    • NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing
    • NVQ Level 2 Make-Up

    Good dexterity skills are paramount and this will be with a skills test. You will need to enjoy working with other people and co-operate as part of a team. You need to be committed and keen to practise as you learn new skills. Entry is through a personal interview and suitable reference
  • Is there anything else I need to know?

    The course begins in September and finishes in July.
    Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include visits and extra external professional development courses, which are payable by all students.

    You will need to have a creative flair with good dexterity skills and attend group and individual tutorials. There will be external trips and competitions that you will need to attend as part of this course. You will attend college for around 15hrs over 3 days over 1 year, some classes may have a late finish after 6pm.

    The Make-up industry has an accepted dress code and all students will be expected to comply with these standards of dress when working in the Salon. No jewellery or acrylic nails are allowed by the exam board.
    Professional work wear will include a black tunic and full smart full-length black trousers and black full shoes.

    As part of your practical assessments, you will perform make over practical sessions and will be responsible for providing models if not working on peers. Assessments will be to the awarding body requirements.
    You will be expected to have a minimum of 90% attendance and all absences must be explained to your tutor with medical evidence if there is more than one week of absence.

    Working in theatres and back stage at productions will give learners the opportunity to complete a realistic work placement.

    Competition and enterprise (compulsory attendance required at the annual beauty competition and showcase) - HT068-YP01
    1:1 tutorials – HT004-YP01
    Maths and English (depending upon your entry grades, you will complete either functional skills, GCSEs or projects).

    Assessment


    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

    Financial


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.
