    This exciting course is designed to bring out your creativity and flair for media make-up in readiness for a career in this competitive industry. The Diploma covers Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up in an enlivening course. You will learn a vast range of skills from; fashion make-up, application of prosthetic pieces, airbrushing, creative hair-styling, wig work and much more. If you are creative, this is the course for you!

    This programme of study will interest students who would like to work within the creative make-up industry, such as fashion, photographic studios, theatre or preparation for higher education.

    The programme will give you a comprehensive coverage of various make-up techniques, airbrushing, special effects, basic prosthetics, hair and the application of a postiche.

  • Entry requirements

    You will need to have successfully achieved one of the following:

    • VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up
    • VRQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy
    • NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing
    • NVQ Level 2 Make-Up

    Good dexterity skills are paramount and this will be with a skills test. You will need to enjoy working with other people and co-operate as part of a team. You need to be committed and keen to practise as you learn new skills. Entry is through a personal interview and suitable reference.
  • How will I be assessed?

    Practical observation, the practical tasks are assessed and your achievements will be recorded in your logbook. There are written tests and oral questions to assess knowledge and assignment work for certain aspects of the course. Records of all the work undertaken should be kept to provide evidence of competence. These will form the basis of your portfolio, together with a range of photographic evidence. The practical assessments will be graded pass, merit or distinction.

    Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include visits and extra external professional development courses, which are payable by all students.

    You will need to have a creative flair with good dexterity skills and attend group and individual tutorials. There will be external trips and competitions that you will need to attend as part of this course. You will attend college for around 15 hours over 3 days over 1 year, some classes may have a late finish after 6pm.

    The Make-up industry has an accepted dress code and all students will be expected to comply with these standards of dress when working in the Salon. No jewellery or acrylic nails are allowed by the exam board. Professional work wear will include a t-shirt, hoodie and smart full-length black trousers and black full shoes.

    As part of your practical assessments, you will perform make over practical sessions and will be responsible for providing models if not working on peers. Assessments will be to the awarding body requirements.

    You will be expected to have a minimum of 92% attendance and all absences must be explained to your tutor with medical evidence if there is more than one week of absence.

    Working in theatres and back stage at productions will give learners the opportunity to complete a realistic work placement.

    This course may be free if you are aged 19-23 and do not already hold a full level 3, or higher, qualification.

  • Future opportunities

    After completing this professional level qualification which is recognised internationally within the industry, you will be able to progress onto employment to become a Make-up Artist or Make-up Assistant.

    You could also continue studies within specialist television training or apply to; HND/Foundation Degree in fashion subjects, photography or Make-up and special effects, Level 4 Media Make-up, Specialist television training. A Top-Up degree is also available as an option in Media Make Up Studies.

    Coronavirus Update

    In response to the COVID-19 situation we have made a number of changes to our traditional admissions and enrolment processes.
    Most conditional offers and enrolments are currently being processed based on the information available to us at the time of a telephone interview and/or online enrolment.
    Once a course starts and we are able to meet with learners in person we may need to alter the class an individual attends if they do not meet the course entry requirements. We will keep learners informed of any decision to alter their class and support them through any changes necessary.
