Parent / Carer Information

If you’re the parent / carer of a full-time student aged 16-18 at Bolton College, we hope you’ll find lots of useful information below to help your son or daughter settle into college life.


We know from experience that with your involvement and encouragement, your teenager will be able to make the very most of their time at College and when it’s time to move on, they’ll have the confidence to springboard on to higher education or an exciting new career.

    As a parent / carer, you can trust us to provide a welcoming environment for your son or daughter; one that is safe, caring, and friendly and that creates a setting in which learning is interesting and effective. As well as delivering top-class courses designed to enable students to progress to further and higher education, or to embark on worthwhile careers, we will also help learners to develop essential skills, such as time management, self-discipline and responsibility.


    You can expect prompt marking, written reports and one-to-one support - plus regular reports on progress.

    Your son or daughter may be entitled to financial help while they are at College. You can download our guidelines on financial help available from our All about the money page. 

  • Being Responsible

    We’ve designed the college timetable to provide sufficient learning hours to deliver the course and to offer students what they need to succed in their studies. It’s very important they attend all classes and arrive on time. If they don’t, they will jeopardise their chance of success, and it could lead to financial support being withdrawn.


    There is no eating or drinking in class, except for bottled water, and we insist students turn off mobile phones and MP3 players. There is a no smoking policy throughout the College.

  • Moving On

    Our college courses are all about progression, whether into employment or on to university. Your son or daughter will be able to talk to his/her personal tutor and teachers about Higher Education or discuss this with Student Services. Information, advice and guidance are all available throughout their time at college.

  • Support

    As a full-time student, your son or daughter will have access to a Learning Development Mentor once a week to offer support with anything from settling into college life to improving their study techniques.


    We understand how important it is to stay in touch. To this end, we offer parents' evenings and keep you updated on your son or daughter’s progress.


    Please note that for students over the age of 18, we cannot discuss their situation without their consent.

  • Homework

    All courses include work outside of the classroom. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and complete any homework within set deadlines. Assignment schedules are available along with individual learning targets.


    It’s good to stress the importance of sleep and a healthy lifestyle!


    There are ample opportunities for self-guided study: the library is open every day and there are also online learning opportunities available.
