Special Needs Coordinators in Early Years Settings NCFE CACHE Award Level 3

The Early Years Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) qualification is for a Level 3 Early Years Practitioner or Early Years Teaching Assistant in reception, or a private, voluntary or independent setting. All early years providers are required to have arrangements in place to identify and support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and to promote equality of opportunity for children in their care.

This is an important role to ensure the best possible educational outcomes are achieved for children with SEND.

This qualification aims to:
- explore the role and responsibilities of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator in an early years setting
- understand the strategies and techniques for supporting children and their families
- increase knowledge of SEND codes of practice
- assist you in engaging in SENCO role by completing tasks in setting

You need to hold a Level 3 Early Years EYE qualification, or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification and be in employment within the Early Years/Education Sector.

You will be provided with tasks to complete in setting to encourage engagement within a SENCO role and form part of our formative assessment of your learning. There are two mandatory units, where assignment based writing and reflective writing is required. Each assignment for the two units are available electronically and must be submitted online on or before the submission dates provided by your tutor.

The qualification is designed for those already working in a SENCo role as part of their level 3 early years practitioner/teaching assistant role, or those who are interested in doing so. Attendance is extremely important to ensure you receive the full benefits of the course. The assignments that form part of the assessment are online and therefore you must have access to a computer and the internet at home. You are required to participate in class activities, as well as carry out tasks within your setting. The course runs for 20 weeks with sessions delivered fortnightly to give you the opportunity to implement the tasks set in setting. Classes do not run during half term and termly holidays.

The course fees are £225 and are payable upon enrolment. If your employer is paying for this course on your behalf, please provide a letter on letter headed paper from your employer confirming their agreement to pay for the course when you come to enrol. The college will then send an invoice to your employer.

Assessment

All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.
