Overview of the course
Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study. The construction industry offers plenty of scope for working on a range of different projects, both at home and abroad, with the chance of one day becoming your own boss. You will develop the skills that you gained on Level 1 (or equivalent) as you explore both practical and theoretical aspects of the trade. You will be taught by industry-experienced tutors in workshops that reflect the workplace. You will also have the opportunity to compete in national skillscompetitions, such as SkillBuild. Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.
What you'll learn
You will cover every aspect of the brickwork trade area, from basic tasks to the types of jobs the industry will demand from you. The course is split into modules/units and you will be allocated a specialist tutor who will support you and help you to reach your full potential. You will cover areas
• Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and
• Understanding Information, Quantities and
Communication with Others
• Understanding Construction Technology
• Set out Masonry Structures
• Construct Solid Walling Incorporating Isolated and
• Construct Cavity Walling Forming Masonry Structures
English and maths is an essential part of the programme that you will require in order to progress. If required for your chosen career or HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.
You will need either an NVQ or Diploma Level 1 in Brickwork or some previous experience of construction and bricklaying to start the Diploma Level 2. Your suitability for the course will be determined from either completion of a previous course or an informal interview by a staff member, plus a satisfactory school reference. If you’ve got practical skills and are OK with maths and
science, that’s definitely an advantage.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the duration of the course and receive feedback and tips on how to improve your skills. There is an end-of-course assessment of
your practical ability, and knowledge tests for each section of the Diploma.
If you choose to look for paid work you could opt for a Brickwork Apprenticeship and work as an Apprentice Bricklayer.

Following further study you could work as:
• A Bricklayer, earning between £20,000 and £40,000 a
year, depending on experience
• A Cavity Insulation Installer, earning between
£12,000 and £30,000 a year
• A Stonemason, earning between £15,000 and
£35,000 a year
