Overview of the course
Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.
Painting & decorating offers plenty of scope for working on a range of different projects, with the chance of one day becoming your own boss.
This course will develop the skills that you gained on the Level 1 course by enabling you to further your practical and theoretical knowledge of the trade and gain more in-depth skills in order to progress with your studies or in to employment.
You will be taught by industry-experienced tutors in workshops that reflect the workplace.
Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.
What you'll learn

• Surface Preparation
• Paint Application
• Wall covering Application
• Health & Safety Considerations
• Effective Working Techniques
The course will cover these subject areas in both a practical workshop setting and a classroom environment.
If required for your chosen career or HE course, you may wish to study English & maths to Level 3.
Elements of study
Your programme consists of the following elements:
• Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
• English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
• Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
• Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
• Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills).
You should have completed the Diploma Level 1 course or be able to demonstrate that you have substantial painting and decorating knowledge, skills and experience.
You’ll be asked to come for an informal interview and we’ll need to see a satisfactory school reference.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to demonstrate competence in nine units. (Some of these units may have been assessed during your Level 1 Diploma.)
You will complete various practical assessments and a series of online end-of-unit tests.
Supporting your learning and wellbeing
We want you to enjoy every minute of College, both
in the classroom and out of it, so we have a range
of dedicated support and wellbeing services. These

Development Mentors; impartial advice and guidance;
dedicated one-to-one support for learners with
additional needs; and support with the cost of College,

After you have completed the course you could remain in college and progress on to the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Painting & Decorating.
Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could opt for a Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship.

Following further study you could work as:
• A Painter and Decorator, earning between £16,000 and £28,000 a year, depending on experience.
• A French Polisher, earning between £13,000 and £30,000 a year.
• A Handyperson, earning between £13,000 and £23,000 a year.

As part of our Pre-Professionals Programme, you’ll have your own personal Learning Development Mentor
and Careers Coach. They’ll help you to manage your studies, oversee your progress and aid in your personal
You’ll also benefit from quality work experience and industry placements, ensuring that you’re ready for the
world of work.
You could also benefit from getting involved in volunteering opportunities, both locally and abroad,
and youth social action projects, perfect for enhancing your CV.
