Overview of the course
The engineering sector offers excellent career opportunities in general, electrical/electronic, mechanical, computer and manufacturing engineering. The rewards include a job that is well paid, diverse and engaging. It will also give you the opportunity to develop transferable skills which are in demand locally, nationally and worldwide. Courses are delivered by tutors with a wealth of
specialist skills, based on years of industry experience and academic status. The curriculum is furthermore developed alongside employer needs. Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

What you'll learn
This fascinating and informative course consists of:
Year one:
• Engineering Principles
• Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
• Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
• Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
Plus three optional units
Year Two: Extended Diploma
• A specialist Engineering Project
• Microcontroller Systems for Engineers (assessed externally)
• Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems
Plus six optional units
Elements of Study
Your programme consists of the following elements:
• Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
• English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
• Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)

Entry requirements
We ask that you have either four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English and Science or the Engineering BTEC Diploma Level 2

How will I be assessed?
You will be continually assessed throughout the years; with an average of three assignments per unit. There will be three externally assessed units.

Future opportunities
Alongside your studies, you’ll have a unique opportunity to be part of the University of Bolton’s EXCEED programme. This will give you a range of additional skills and experiences, and includes masterclasses; university visits; access to industry experts; and mentoring and support with your university application, perfect for that next step into Higher Education. Following further study you could work as:
• An Electrical Engineer where you could earn up to£40,000 a year, depending on experience. Once Chartered, you could earn £45,000 a year or more
• A Telecoms Engineer, earning between £16,000 and£30,000 a year
• A Design and Development Engineer, earning between £21,000 and £55,000 a year, depending on experience

Pre-Professionals Programme
As part of our Pre-Professionals Programme, you’ll have your own personal Learning Development Mentor and Careers Coach. They’ll help you to manage your studies, oversee your progress and aid in your personal development. You’ll also benefit from quality work experience and industry placements, ensuring that you’re ready for the world of work. You could also benefit from getting involved in volunteering opportunities, both locally and abroad, and youth social action projects, perfect for enhancing your CV.
