  • Overview of the course

    This course will develop your knowledge and skills enabling you to work effectively as a health and social care worker. This course will compliment your work-based training and give you a nationally recognised qualification in health and social care. The qualification is made up of three pathways: Generic Health and Social Care, Dementia and Learning Disability. You will choose the pathway that is relevant to your work setting.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed in the workplace as part of the qualification. You will complete a portfolio showing that you have met all the criteria for each unit. You will be required to write assignments and tasks for each unit.
  • What can I expect to learn?

    You will complete the nine mandatory units (24 credits):
    Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
    Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
    Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
    Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
    Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
    The role of the health and social care worker
    Implement person-centered approaches in health and social care
    Contribute to health and safety in health and social care
    Handle information in health and social care settings

    You will also be required to complete optional units linked to your job role.
    The total credits for this qualification is 46 credits

  • How can I progress after this course?

    You can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) providing you are in a suitable job role. However, if you work with children in a health and social care setting to may be able to study the Level 3 Diploma for the Children’s and Young People’s Workforce providing you are in a suitable job role.
  • What do I need to join the course?

    There are no formal entry requirements but you must be working in a health and social care setting either in paid employment or in a suitable voluntary capacity. You job role will be discussed at the interview to make certain it is suitable. You must be over 19 years of age and you will need to possess the required literacy skills to complete the assignments and tasks.
  • Is there anything else I need to know?

    You must tell your Manager or employer you are applying for the course as their consent will be required for a College assessor to observe you in the workplace. You will be required to bring with you to the interview a letter giving their consent which has been signed by your Manager.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Please note: Learners on a Learner Responsive course (shown under the course code) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
