    This course is aimed at people who are considering a career working with children in nurseries, before and after school clubs, holiday play schemes, pre-school and play school settings. The course aims to develop a basic knowledge of the childcare sector and explore the types of job roles and services within it.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will complete a portfolio showing that you have met all the criteria for each unit. You will be required to write tasks and complete activities for each unit.

  • How can I progress after this course?

    You may progress onto the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce providing you are in a suitable job or placement providing 12 hours work experience per week and you have developed and demonstrated appropriate skills and attitudes. Interview required.
  • What do I need to join the course?

    There are no formal entry requirements but you must have an interest pursuing a career working with children. You must be over 19 years of age.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.


    Tutors teach throughout the day and evening and are not always available by phone. Please leave a voicemail message where possible and we will ring you back as soon as possible.
    Please note: Learners on a Learner Responsive course (shown under the course code) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
