  • Overview of the course

    The Bolton College Fitness Academy is a unique opportunity for enthusiastic young people who are interested in becoming Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers.
    The course is aimed at people who already attend gyms and aspire to work in gym environments, or may have gym instructor qualifications that they wish to add to.
    Once you have completed Year 1 of the Fitness Academy you will be equipped with a portfolio of qualifications which meet the needs of both local and national employers and you can progress onto our Level 3
    Personal Training Diploma or an Apprenticeship.
    An example of additional qualifications you will obtain
    in your 1st year are:
    • Indoor Cycling Instructor
    • Circuit Training Instructor
    • Suspension Training Instructor (TRX)
    • First Aid at Work
    Please note - These are industry ready qualifications and so do not carry any UCAS points, instead, the course focuses on employability.

    Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study. Whether you have the drive and ambition to get to the top of the podium, or the passion and dedication to put someone else there, this sports qualification can help you reach the peak of your game. If you give us commitment, enthusiasm and motivation, we will give you the knowledge and practical skills that you are looking for. You will build on the skills that you gained on the Level 2 course.

    • Gym Based Programmed Planning & Preparation
    • Gym Based Programme Delivery & Professional Instruction
    We encourage our students to continue their English &
    maths study to Level 3.
    Elements of Study
    Your programme consists of the following elements:
    • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
    • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
    Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
    • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
    • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)
  • Entry requirements

    You need the ambition of a career in sport and fitness, and will preferably already have achieved Maths and/or English Language at Grade 4 or above. All learners will be formally interviewed by staff to assess their
    suitability for the study programme.
  • How will I be assessed?

    There is a formal multiple choice external assessment on the YMCA course, and learners are also assessed using a variety of different methods such as questions sheets, task workbooks and tutor observations. Some units have more practical assignments that require visits to local sports facilities for activities. All coursework also incorporates many aspects of developing your written
    English and maths capabilities, up to the standards
    required by employers.

    Alongside your studies, you’ll have a unique opportunity to be part of the University of Bolton’s EXCEED programme. This will give you a range of additional skills and experiences, and includes masterclasses; university visits; access to industry experts; and mentoring and support with your university application, perfect for that next step into Higher Education.
    You could progress onto the Level 3 Fitness & Wellbeing Academy. Alternatively, BTEC courses are also available to focus on developing more academic knowledge and
    vocational industry related skills, combined with work related experience for progressing onto university or improving your employment potential in preparation for work.

    Following further study you could work as:
    • A Fitness Instructor, where you could earn between
    £14,000 and £20,000 a year, depending on
    • A Personal Trainer, earning between £14,000 and
    £22,000 a year.
    • A PE Teacher, earning between £24,000 and £32,000
    a year.

    Following further study you could work as:
    • A Fitness Instructor where you could earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year, depending on experience.
    • A Personal Trainer, earning between £12,000 and £20,000 a year.
    • A PE Teacher, earning between £22,000 and £32,000 a year.

  • Pre-Professionals Programme

    As part of our Pre-Professionals Programme, you’ll have your own personal Learning Development Mentor and Careers Coach. They’ll help you to manage your studies, oversee your progress and aid in your personal development.
    You’ll also benefit from quality work experience and industry placements, ensuring that you’re ready for the world of work. You could also benefit from getting involved in volunteering opportunities, both locally and abroad, and youth social action projects, perfect for enhancing your CV.
