Chris Green MP recently visited an exceptional former Bolton College apprentice, now an entrepreneur with his own thriving business where he mentors his own apprentice.

Chris was joined by Jennifer Walker, Bolton College’s Head of Apprenticeships & Business Development, after hearing about Corey Dickinson’s evolution from Bolton College apprentice to barbershop owner in just three years. 

Corey, 21, is now the owner of Tonsor Male Grooming, a highly-successful Westhoughton barbershop with nearly 400 five-star reviews on fresha, a leading platform for hair and beauty.

Corey shared his journey and said: “I preferred practical tasks at school so, after discovering a love of barbering, I became an apprentice at 16.

“At 18 I became shop manager then at 19, I bought out my boss and rebranded the barbershop to Tonsor Male Grooming; I now employ a Bolton College apprentice because I want to create opportunities for those who, like me, have a passion and drive to do well; it's important for me to give back and mentor young people who were once in my shoes, ensuring that they have the chance to achieve their dreams, regardless of their background or starting point.

“Not everyone thrives at school but given the right environment, anyone can become successful and achieve qualifications.”

Business is thriving for Corey; early last year, he recently expanded his services with the addition of an aesthetics studio. TMG Cosmetics offers aesthetics treatments for both men and women, as well as facials, vitamin injections and more, and is run by Corey’s mother, Jo Ronaldson, who embraced the opportunity to join her son’s business.

Bolton College, which is part of the University of Bolton Group, works with over 600 leading employers across the North West, supplying apprentices for a variety of sectors, including construction, education and financial services.

Jennifer Walker added: “Corey's progression from apprentice to barbershop owner in just three years is a testament to his dedication and hard work.

“His commitment to providing opportunities for other young people through apprenticeships reflects the values we strive to instil in our students at Bolton College.

“Corey is a shining example of the positive impact vocational training can have on individuals and communities.”
